Red Mountain Mining confirms tungsten skarn at Pioneer with high-grade rock chips

  • Red Mountain Mining confirms the presence of tungsten skarn mineralisation at its Pioneer project in Montana

  • Results from rock chip sampling identified tungsten values exceeding 500ppm in 10 samples

  • Further sampling ahead of potential drill testing now planned

Special Report: Red Mountain Mining has confirmed the presence of tungsten-bearing skarn mineralisation at its Pioneer tungsten project in Montana in results from 30 rock chip samples.

The assays returned elevated tungsten values across multiple prospects, supporting the company’s view the project has potential to host a significant skarn system.

Sampling from the Mammoth and Greenstone prospects identified tungsten values exceeding 500 parts per million WO3 in a third of all samples.

Peak results included 3159ppm WO3 from a garnet skarn float sample at Greenstone and 2856ppm WO3 from a skarn outcrop at Mammoth.

Red Mountain Mining (ASX:RMX)said the results are comparable to grades reported at the Gentung deposit some 200m away, which is owned by the $6.7 billion market capped Almonty Industries (ASX:AII).

Gentung hosts a resource totalling 7.53Mt at 0.315% WO3.

Management also noted that Pioneer sits along the eastern margin of the Mount Torrey Batholith, a geological setting known for limestone-hosted garnet skarn systems containing scheelite.

Geological setting strengthens case

The Pioneer tenure hosts the Greenstone, Mammoth and Lost Creek claim areas, where granodiorite intrudes carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks.

Red Mountain said that historical works and mapping show extensive skarn development in the region, with tungsten mineralisation previously mined in the district during the 1950s and 1970s.

Here, historical operations at the Ivanhoe and Lost Creek mines produced an estimated 680,000 tonnes of tungsten ore.

The company noted that magnetic modelling points to the potential for further subsurface skarn systems beneath shallow cover, strengthening exploration upside at the project.

Moving forward

Red Mountain is now planning further systematic sampling at the highest-priority Greenstone prospect in mid-July, as it looks to define potential drill targets.

The group expects to move rapidly towards drill testing of downdip extensions of the skarn mineralisation, subject to positive results from the sampling program.

Separately, the company confirmed that drilling at its Armidale antimony-gold project in NSW is scheduled to commence this month, with a contractor already secured.
