Red Mountain revs up the rig for first Armidale antimony-gold drilling

  • Red Mountain Mining launches 17-hole maiden RC drilling program at Oaky Creek

  • Targeting five priority antimony-gold zones defined by surface sampling and geophysics

  • Drilling expected to take three weeks, with assays due early in December quarter

Special Report: Red Mountain Mining has kicked off its maiden drilling campaign at the Armidale antimony-gold project in NSW, targeting a series of priority targets at the Oaky Creek prospect.

The 17-hole RC program is designed to test targets generated through comprehensive rock chip, conventional soil and auger soil sampling campaigns over the past 12 months.

Drilling will test a 300m by 30m antimony-arsenic auger soil anomaly at Oaky Creek South, which returned up to 39.3% antimony and 1.09g/t gold in rock chip samples.

It will also target historical workings and outcropping quartz-carbonate-stibnite veins at Oaky Creek North, along with an antimony-bearing creek exposure further to the north.

The campaign is expected to last about three weeks with results expected early in the December quarter.

Oaky Creek has emerged as Red Mountain Mining's (ASX:RMX) highest-priority target within the 391km2 Armidale tenure.

It lies in the Southern New England Orogen of NSW, which is Australia’s premier antimony mineral province.

To the east, the $650 million market-capped Larvotto Resources (ASX:LRV) is about to begin production at its Hillgrove project, considered one of the world’s largest antimony deposits.

Red Mountain believes Oaky Creek is geologically akin to Hillgrove.

Oaky Creek in focus

Oaky Creek features quartz-carbonate-stibnite veins and breccias within a tightly folded and faulted sequence of metamorphosed carboniferous mudstone, siltstone and fine sandstone.

The mineralisation is centred on two groups of shallow historical pits and shafts at Oaky Creek North and Oaky Creek South.

Red Mountain’s sampling outlined multiple areas grading more than 25% Sb and 0.1g/t Au, with mineralised and anomalous rock samples showing a strong spatial correlation with the soil anomaly.

Taken together, the soil and rock chip results point to a potential orogenic antimony-gold system extending for about 3km in strike.

The company also recently completed a hand auger campaign totalling about 1300 samples across the 3km trend, tightening the existing soil grid to help define individual drill targets.

That work identified five high-priority orogenic antimony targets for testing.

An IP survey completed over Oaky Creek South further strengthened the drilling targets.

Modelling identified a coherent chargeability anomaly extending beneath and at least 300m southwest of outcropping quartz-carbonate-stibnite veins and shallow historical workings.

The anomaly stretches from surface to at least 200m depth and along at least 400m of strike, significantly increasing the size of the South Workings target.

Elsewhere, RMX is awaiting results from a systematic sampling program at its recently acquired Pioneer tungsten project in Montana.

Initial reconnaissance sampling returned grades up to 0.32% WO3 from the Greenstone claim area and 0.29% WO3 from the Mammoth claims.

Assays from the campaign are expected early next month.
